Garden Room #2

Before Title

Following on from my Garden Room #1 post interviewing Woody from The Garden Room Guide, you should now be armed with all the online research you need to start on your garden room journey. Next is writing your brief. This is our brief, keeping in mind that design should be functional and inspirational: The office needed to be big enough for 3 people to work in comfortably. We could fit in the garden an office between 12sqm and 15sqm (4 to 5m wide and 3m deep) which is perfect for 3 people. Working out sight lines into the house, the view from the office and the sun orientation (important for glare issues), we worked out the best location. As it will be seen from our bedroom – and overlooked by our neighbours – I was keen on a flat roof design preferably with a sedum roof (a living planted roof). I wanted a modern design and the option to chose Anthracite Grey windows to match the house. I won’t list here that it needed to be comfortable all year round as all modern garden rooms are and each company you look at will list how they achieve this as without this, […]

50 shades of blue

A few weeks ago I co-wrote a post with Sarah Johnson from Tuck Sleep – a non-commercial community devoted to improving sleep hygiene, health and wellness through the creation and dissemination of comprehensive, unbiased, free web-based resources – about the science behind well-designed bedrooms and in particular, why some design choices create a relaxing sleep environment. I came across another Dulux blue in a pub in the Cotswolds, Raven Plume. I of course had the manager off into the shed to get me the paint reference. It’s a greyer blue but as you can see it’s beautiful in the sun. Dulux Breton Blue is a darker than Raven Plume, so most people only use it on a feature wall pairing it with […]

Garden Room #1

When we moved from Canada to the UK 3 years ago, my husband wanted a better work life balance and was keen to find a new job with a great company that would also enable him to work from home 3 days a week. Not only did he manage this, but over time those 2 days turned to 1 and now it’s only every now and again he ventures out. It has been such a success that the company he works for has decided to go completely office-less. They are instead investing in home hubs as a way to not only enable staff to work from home more comfortably, but also give them a place to get together when they need to look each other in the eyes. So we’re getting a home hub in the garden! Yay. As you know if you follow my blog, I have completely redesigned our home, turning it from a very dated 1950s house to a lovely modern home – so clearly I couldn’t leave the design of a building in the garden to someone else. Like everything I do, it started with some online research and if you go down that route you […]
