How to Marie Antoinette

Antoinette Annie Sloan

A few of you lovely people have asked how I come up with my room designs so I thought I would talk you through the creation of the Marie Antoinette tween bedroom. Like all good HMP designs, it started at my local charity shop where I was really feeling the rattan and came back with this gorgeous haul. I used the shelving units in my girls’ playhouse 1b but I only got the bedhead as it was too beautiful to leave in the shop. I had just been on my Annie Sloan painting course so I had a pot of Antoinette – a beautiful dusty pink – Annie Sloan chalk paint in the kitchen itching to be used. And the bedhead did call out for some pink, so after fixing it a bit (to make it symmetrical) I painted it and then waxed it with Annie Sloan clear wax. My eldest daughter was very intrigued by the bedhead and wanted to know more about this ‘Antoinette’ I was talking about. You see as a Frenglish family (French English) Antoinette is said the French way and sounded like I was speaking about a friend. Somehow the conversation when on to the fact that there was once […]

Melamine

M&S Dovecote Melamine Tesco Navy Pattern Melamine

In 1997, my Big Granny died. (I had a very tall granny and a short granny aka Big Granny and Little Granny.) My uncle asked if I wanted anything of hers. I was 17 at the time and not really sure what to take but a had a lovely memory of having dinner with my Big Granny and we had pudding in these cool – well cool for a Granny – Chinese inspired blue and white bowls, so I asked for them. They were the start of my china collection. From then on, I’ve only bought blue and white china. A wonderful mix matched collection and it doesn’t matter if something breaks as there’s no perfect set. So now we are settled in our new home, I’ve decided to build a melamine collection for outdoor dining and picnics. And I had to follow my mix matched blue and white theme. So here’s the beginning of the collection. Like my china collection I’ll add to it bit by bit as I see pieces I like but I guess the plus of melamine is, there shouldn’t be any breakage! The beautiful floral designed plates are from the new M&S outdoor collection and […]

Pale Dogwood

Pantone Pale Dogwood

Pale Dogwood? No I haven’t gone mad, it’s a Pantone colour for Spring 2017. And like Greenery – the Pantone colour of the year – you will see this pink influence all things design this Spring and Summer – from clothes to interiors. To translate Pale Dogwood into interiors I was interested to see how it would look in paint. Using the Pantone reference, you can colour match to paint colours on the website e-paint.co.uk and the nearest match in Dulux was Autumn Fern 5. Top tip: if you go on the Dulux website and type in the colour you would like to try, you can get mini testers (30ml) sent to your home. Much cheaper than buying them in a shop and of course, a lot more choice. So I ordered up Dulux Autumn Fern 5 – the closest match to Pale Dogwood I could find – to try it out. But of course, as this is an interior trend, a few other pinks had caught my eye: Dulux Pink Nevada 6 was over all my Instagram stories a few weeks ago as Interior Stylist, Sophie Robinson, was trying to find the ‘perfect pink’ for her annex if you follow my blog you will know Farrow & […]
